Why I Love Low Calorie Desserts
I enjoy desserts and learned early on that completely cutting out treats made dieting harder, not easier. Trying to remove sugar entirely left me craving more and occasionally led to overeating. A more sustainable approach for me was finding ways to enjoy the flavors I love while keeping recipes lighter and satisfying.
Making healthier versions of favorite treats has become my approach. I’ve developed recipes for protein ice cream, lighter puddings, and low calorie cookies, and I even made glazed donut holes in a lighter version before creating this lemon poppyseed donut hole recipe. If you’re trying to lose weight but want to keep dessert in your plan, these are an easy, satisfying option.

How to Make Lemon Poppyseed Donut Holes
These lemon poppyseed donut holes use just five simple ingredients and come together quickly. They’re great for sharing or for keeping on hand when a sweet craving strikes.
Ingredients
- 1 cup self-rising flour
- 2/3 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp zero-calorie sweetener (erythritol)
- 2 tsp poppyseeds
- 2 tsp lemon juice
Directions
- Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix until a dough forms. Use your hands to knead the dough—this helps incorporate everything evenly.
- Divide the dough into 15–20 equal balls, about 15 grams each.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (or the oven to 400°F). Cook the donut holes in the air fryer for about 4 minutes, or until they begin to brown. If using an oven, bake at 400°F until lightly golden.
- Remove the donut holes from the air fryer or oven and let them cool slightly.
- To make the glaze, blend the erythritol to a powdered consistency, then mix with a splash of milk until you reach a glaze-like consistency. Dip or coat each donut hole in the glaze and finish with extra poppyseeds and a touch of lemon zest.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
