Lincoln at 3 Months: Growth, Milestones, and Care Guide

I was so proud of myself for scheduling this to post on Linc’s actual three-month day — and then realized I’d scheduled it for the 24th and missed his milestone. I didn’t notice until 7 p.m., which felt ridiculous, but here we are.

As I write this he’s fussy, so I can’t say he never fusses. If he never fussed I’d probably worry something was wrong. He fusses just enough to prove he’s a real human baby. I should probably go cuddle him.

An hour after I wrote that first paragraph Linc fell asleep. He’ll likely stay down until around 6:30 a.m., which means my three-month-old is sleeping through the night. I have no idea how or why—if I did I’d be writing a parenting book and probably a millionaire—but he sleeps, which means I sleep, and that’s the only reason I’m still functioning. I hate when people ask, “So, are you getting any sleep?” because they expect the typical tired-new-parent answer. It feels weird to say, “Yep, nine or ten hours straight!” No one wants to hear about my freakishly good sleeper.

Linc has drifted away from the schedule he kept the past couple of months. He’s awake more now, so I can’t count on him sleeping through every dentist appointment, haircut, or errand, but sometimes he does. He still loves being held by anyone, so if a friendly dental hygienist has a spare minute she’ll happily hold him — and mine actually took him into the waiting room to show him off. I had to reclaim him after my cleaning; apparently they wanted to keep him, but I didn’t need that much dental work, so home he came.

He still sleeps in my room, even though the nursery is all set up and adorable. I have a fancy video monitor to watch him sleep through the night, but I don’t want him to be far away. He’s tiny and cute and I honestly feel a biological pull to have him in the room with me. Our nursing rhythm is super in-sync—my body somehow wakes a couple minutes before he does—so I think room-sharing helps. There’s plenty of time for him to enjoy his nursery once he’s old enough to appreciate it.

Also, I’m pretty sure his bottom right front tooth is coming in. I felt it. I don’t remember if that’s early for teething, but it sure felt real.

Likes: sleeping, eating, smiling, tickles, his brother and sister, the Otteroo neck float, being carried, looking at things, ceiling fans, his feet, Daddy, Mommy, flirting, water, the swing, the baby gym, blankies, and diaper changes (well, maybe not the changing part, but he tolerates it).

Dislikes: gas bubbles, not being fed quickly enough, loud noises, and getting his head accidentally bumped on odd objects.

That soft thing he’s lying on is one of my woven wraps — a KoKaDi Captain. I wasn’t sure I loved it at first, but it matches his nursery and Linc clearly adores it, so it’s staying as his blankie.

3-Month Milestones (adapted from BabyCenter)

Mastered Skills (most babies)
Recognizes your face and scent — Definitely. He clearly prefers me.
Holds head steady — Mostly. Wearing him a lot seems to be strengthening his neck; he lifts his big head to look around.
Visually tracks moving objects — Absolutely. He especially watches my phone, because apparently I’m a fascinating object.

Emerging Skills (about half of babies)
Squeals, gurgles, coos — He loves chatting and flirting with people.
Blows bubbles — Sometimes. He laughs at bubbles when I blow them.
Recognizes your voice — Yes. Again: he likes me best.
Does mini-pushup — Not yet. He dislikes tummy time and I’m in no rush for him to become mobile — third-baby mindset.

Advanced Skills (few babies)
Rolls over (tummy to back) — Not yet. He shifts side to side but isn’t rolling.
Turns toward loud sounds — Yes. He’ll get annoyed if you startle him.
Brings hands together, bats at toys — Yes. He grabs toys from his baby gym and often gets them to his mouth. He also found his feet, which is my favorite milestone. Feet!
