Chunky Monkey Smoothie Bowl with Banana, Chocolate & Peanut Crunch

This Chocolate Chunky Monkey Smoothie Bowl brings together rich chocolate, creamy frozen banana and a hit of peanut butter for an indulgent, spoonable smoothie bowl. Thick and satisfying, it works perfectly as a hearty breakfast, post-workout meal or a nutritious snack. The frozen banana lends a luxuriously smooth texture while cocoa and protein powder deepen the chocolate flavour. Dates naturally sweeten the bowl and add a touch of caramel-like complexity.

This version of the Chunky Monkey smoothie is intentionally thick so you can eat it with a spoon rather than drink it. The texture is creamy and dense thanks to the frozen banana and just the right amount of liquid. Protein powder increases the protein content and adds body, making the bowl more filling and balanced. A small amount of cocoa powder intensifies the chocolaty notes, while peanut butter contributes healthy fats and a savory counterpoint to the sweetness.

Author: Deryn Macey

Summary: A thick, creamy smoothie bowl packed with chocolate and peanut butter flavour. Easy to make, nutrient-dense and naturally sweetened with dates.

Prep: 5 mins   |   Total: 5 mins   |   Servings: 1 smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, plus more if needed to blend
  • 1 medium frozen banana (about 125 g)
  • 1 serving vanilla or chocolate plant-based protein powder (about 30 g)
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp peanut butter
  • 3 pitted dates (about 21 g), for natural sweetness

Instructions

  1. Pour the almond milk into a high-speed blender.
  2. Add the frozen banana, protein powder, cocoa powder, peanut butter and pitted dates.
  3. Begin blending on low speed to combine the ingredients, then gradually increase to high. Blend until completely smooth and creamy. The frozen banana will create a thick, spoonable texture.
  4. If the mixture is too thick to process, add a splash more almond milk and blend again until you reach the desired consistency. For a drinkable smoothie, increase the liquid to about 1 1/4 cups.
  5. Pour the smoothie into a bowl. Serve immediately with your favourite toppings (see suggestions below) and enjoy with a spoon.

Topping Suggestions

To enhance texture and presentation, try any combination of the following: sliced banana, chopped peanuts or almond flakes, granola, cacao nibs, shredded coconut, a drizzle of extra peanut butter, or a sprinkle of chia seeds. Fresh berries or a few sliced strawberries add a bright contrast to the rich chocolate and peanut butter flavours.

Notes

  • To make the smoothie thinner and more drinkable, increase the almond milk to 1 1/4 cups and blend until smooth.
  • If you prefer fewer calories or less sugar, omit the dates. You can replace them with a small amount of liquid sweetener or leave the bowl unsweetened if your protein powder is sweetened.
  • Use a high-powered blender for the best texture; lower-powered blenders may require a little extra liquid and more blending time.
  • For a different nut profile, substitute almond butter or cashew butter for the peanut butter.
