How to Make a Burlap Wreath in 3 Easy Steps

This fluffy burlap wreath is simple to assemble and looks costly, but it’s inexpensive and quick to make.

It’s a lovely accent for your home interior or a welcoming decoration for your front door. Follow the directions below to make one yourself.

Materials You’ll Need

Pick up these supplies from a craft store or order them online:

  • 12″ wire wreath form with twist ties (tan)
  • Burlap garland—we used two 20′ plain rolls and one 20′ printed roll, each about 6″ wide
  • Scissors
  • Leaves and flowers for decoration (optional); use a glue gun to attach them

If your wreath form doesn’t include twist ties, cut pipe cleaners into 6″ lengths to secure the burlap as you work.

Tip: Burlap ribbon comes in many colors and styles—lace, metallic accents, and printed designs are all options. Choose colors and patterns that complement your decor and the season.

Step 1

This technique creates a casual, floppy ribbon look.

Begin by attaching the end of a plain burlap garland to the outer wire of the wreath form with a twist tie. You’ll use twist ties to secure the burlap at regular intervals as you move around the form.

Step 2

Make a large two-loop bow from the burlap—about 20″ of material per bow. Lay the bow over the next twist-tie stem on the wreath form and twist the tie to hold it in place.

Then pull the burlap along the outer wire rim so the wire is hidden, and secure the next bow at the following stem. Continue alternating bows and securing them as you go.

Repeat this pattern around both the outside and inside rings of the wreath form. We used one roll of plain burlap for the inside and another for the outside to create fullness.

Step 3

Now work with the printed burlap. Make two-loop bows from the printed roll and nestle them between the layers of plain burlap, placing each bow over a twist-tie stem on the outer layer so the printed fabric shows through.

Secure each printed bow with a twist tie. The tie will be mostly hidden by the burlap, with only a small section visible.

Continue around the wreath until the printed burlap is layered evenly between the plain layers. Once finished, fluff the bows and ribbons with your fingers to hide any twist ties and create a full, balanced look.
