Spooky Monster Meatloaf Recipe for Halloween Dinner

I adapted my favorite meatloaf into this Monster Meatloaf Recipe for Halloween and it was a big hit with the kids. The surprised snorts and giggles around the table made the extra effort worthwhile. Happy Halloween!

Halloween Meatloaf

I’ll admit it looks pretty spooky, but it tasted amazing. It’s already become a recipe I’ll make every Halloween. I keep thinking of small tweaks to make it even better next year.

Recipe walkthrough: Instructions

This is an overview of the steps. Refer to the recipe card at the bottom for the full details.

  • Step 1: Prepare and cook a standard meatloaf per the referenced meatloaf recipe.
  • Step 2: While the meatloaf cooks, prepare the vegetables. Carrots should be cooked until tender but still firm—steaming about 15 minutes works well.
  • Step 3: When the meatloaf reaches 160°F, remove it from the oven and transfer it to a plate suitable for decorating.
  • Step 4: Arrange the carrots along the sides for legs, place two mushrooms on top for eyes, add sliced stuffed olives for pupils, use red pepper strips for lips, and dot corn kernels for crooked teeth.
  • Step 5: Serve with mashed potatoes or your favorite sides.

Hint: Use a meat thermometer to ensure the meatloaf reaches the proper internal temperature without overcooking.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Zombie Skull: Shape the meatloaf into a skull instead of a monster for a different spooky look. Other fun shapes include a spider or a foot.
  • Parmesan: Stir grated Parmesan into the meat mixture for added depth.
  • BBQ Glaze: Brush with barbecue sauce instead of tomato sauce if you prefer a sweeter, smoky finish.
  • Brown Sugar: Add a touch to the topping sauce for a caramelized, slightly sweet crust.
  • Black Olives: Swap in black olives if you prefer a darker eye socket appearance.

Notes

I used ground venison in my meatloaf, but you can swap ground beef if you prefer—follow the same meatloaf method.

I left the mushrooms raw to keep them white like eyes, but you can cook them if you prefer. The same goes for the bell pepper strips.

Serve with mashed potatoes and other spooky sides for a complete Halloween meal.
