Fondue nights are making a comeback because they’re fun and communal. After trying our first fondue night, my kids begged for another, and now I plan to make it a regular option at home. Many traditional fondue recipes call for wine or beer, but I created a rich, flavorful non-alcoholic version so the whole family can enjoy it and so it’s easy for those who prefer or require gluten-free ingredients.

What to dip in cheese fondue?

One of the best things about cheese fondue is its versatility—you can dip almost anything. If you want to encourage kids to eat more vegetables, the fun of dipping often helps. I like a colorful mix of bell pepper strips (I used four colors) and broccoli florets. Cauliflower also works well if your family likes it.

For a meatless night, offer a variety of vegetables, fruits, and gluten-free breads or pretzels. Try apple and pear slices for a sweet contrast. If you want to add meat next time, good options include crispy bacon, ham chunks, gluten-free meatballs, or pieces of cooked hamburger—anything sturdy enough to hold a skewer.

gluten-free dippers for cheese fondue

Kids can help prepare the dippers. My boys enjoy cutting tortilla wedges with a pizza cutter. I used certified gluten-free flour tortillas (Udi’s), brushed them with oil, sprinkled coarse sea salt, and baked until crisp—these become soft tortilla-style chips that are gentler on braces. For baguette slices I used Udi’s gluten-free baguettes, cut diagonally into 1/2″ slices, then brushed some with garlic butter and others with olive oil, salt, and herbs before baking.

I also include Glutino gluten-free pretzel sticks, which work well for dipping and keep fingers away from the fondue pot. Small chip-and-dip dishes are handy for portioning fondue on each plate so everyone can dip safely without crowding the pot. Kids can use fondue forks, skewers, or small utensils.

If you want another dip to serve with the tortilla wedges and baguette slices, consider making an easy spinach-artichoke dip for variety.

Notes on ingredients

  • Cheese: I used Gruyere and sharp cheddar for a rich, well-rounded flavor. Other easily melting cheeses like Swiss or Colby Jack work too.
  • Cornstarch: Cornstarch helps thicken the fondue. If you prefer a thinner sauce, reduce or omit it.
  • Worcestershire: Some brands contain gluten due to soy sauce. If you need the fondue to be strictly gluten-free, check labels and choose a gluten-free Worcestershire sauce.

Think about what else your kids would enjoy dipping—there are plenty of tasty, gluten-free possibilities.

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice (about half a lemon)
  • 8 oz. (2 cups) Gruyere cheese, shredded
  • 8 oz. (2 cups) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg

Vegetable & fruit dippers

  • 4 bell peppers, seeded and sliced into strips
  • 1–2 apples, sliced
  • 1–2 pears, sliced
  • 1 head broccoli, cut into bite-sized florets

Tortilla wedges

  • 2 large gluten-free flour tortillas
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • Coarse sea salt

Baguette slices & pretzels

  • 2 gluten-free French baguettes
  • 5–6 Tbsp. garlic butter (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 cups gluten-free pretzel sticks

Instructions

Cheese Fondue:

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the milk, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice. Heat until it reaches a low simmer (barely boiling).
  2. In a bowl or sealed bag, toss the shredded cheeses with the cornstarch to coat evenly.
  3. Add the cheese to the warm milk mixture a handful at a time, stirring constantly until each addition melts and the sauce is smooth.
  4. Stir in garlic powder, dry mustard, and nutmeg. Taste and add salt if needed.
  5. Keep the fondue warm over low heat, or transfer to a fondue pot set over a small flame to serve.

Gluten-free tortilla wedges:

  1. Place two tortillas on parchment, brush with olive oil, and sprinkle with coarse sea salt. Cut each tortilla into 8 wedges and transfer the parchment to a baking sheet. Bake at 400°F for 7–8 minutes until crisp. Serve soon after baking.

Garlic baguette slices:

  1. Optional: line a baking sheet with foil for easy cleanup. Diagonally slice the baguettes into 1/2″ thick slices.
  2. Brush each slice with garlic butter and place butter-side up on the baking sheet. Bake at 400°F for 6–7 minutes until warmed and lightly toasted. Remove and plate.
  3. Arrange dippers and pretzel sticks around the fondue and enjoy.

Notes

*To make homemade garlic butter, melt salted butter and whisk in 1 tsp garlic powder. Add fresh or dried parsley if desired.
